How a roof goes together

Six layers between the weather and your ceiling.

A new roof is more than shingles. When we write a proposal, every one of these layers is listed so you can see what you are paying for.

  1. Roof deck Plywood or OSB sheathing. Checked after tear off and replaced where it is soft.
  2. Ice and water barrier Self sealing membrane at the eaves, valleys, and around penetrations.
  3. Synthetic underlayment A second water barrier across the whole deck, under everything you can see. The printed sheet in the photo.
  4. Starter strip Seals the first course of shingles against wind lift at the edge.
  5. Architectural shingles Or metal panels on a metal system. The part that shows, and the part that takes the weather.
  6. Ridge vent, flashing, and drip edge Where most leaks begin and where the details earn their keep.

    The inspection

    We get on the roof, look in the attic when we can, and photograph what we find. You see the photos and hear a plain explanation. If the roof is fine, we say so.

  2. Then

    A written proposal

    Materials by name, the scope of work, what is excluded, the price, and the warranty terms. In writing, so you can compare it to anyone else’s.

  3. Next

    Scheduling and the work

    We agree on dates and what to expect each day. Landscaping and walkways are covered, materials are staged out of the way, and the site is cleaned up daily.

  4. Last

    The final walkthrough

    We walk the finished job with you, sweep for nails again, and hand over your warranty paperwork and completion photos.

    You get every photo we take and a plain explanation of what each one shows, whether or not you hire us.

    Repair or replace, shingle or metal, now or next year. We will tell you what we would do on our own house and why.

Straight answers to the questions we hear most on inspections.

Repair or replace? How do you decide?

We look at three things: how much of the roof is affected, how old the shingles are, and what is going on underneath. One damaged slope on a roof with years of life left is a repair. Widespread granule loss, brittle shingles, or soft decking usually means repairs would only buy a season or two, and we will say so.

You get the photos either way, so the decision is yours with the evidence in hand.

What decides the price of a new roof?

Roof area, pitch and complexity, the material you choose, how many layers come off, and the condition of the decking underneath. Metal costs more up front than architectural shingles and lasts longer. We give exact pricing only after an inspection, and the proposal lists what is included so there are no surprise line items later.

Is the inspection really free?

Yes. There is no charge and no obligation. We get on the roof, photograph it, and explain what we find. If the roof is in good shape, that is what we will tell you.

What does the warranty cover?

Two things back a SHYLD roof. Our written workmanship warranty covers the installation, with its term stated in your proposal. The manufacturer warranty covers the products themselves and depends on what is installed. We walk through both before you sign anything.

How long does a replacement take?

Most single family homes are torn off and re roofed within a few days, and many in a single day when the weather cooperates. Larger or more complex roofs take longer. Your proposal states the plan and we keep you updated if weather changes it.

Can you help with an insurance claim after a storm?

We can inspect, document the damage with photos, and meet your adjuster on site to walk the roof together. We cannot promise what your carrier will approve, and we do not offer to absorb deductibles. If you want the details, read our guide to storm damage and insurance claims in Tennessee.

Do I need to be home during the work?

Not for the work itself. Someone should be there for the inspection and the final walkthrough. During installation we keep in touch by text and make sure pets and vehicles are out of the way before we start.
